: Who is Romeo Muller?
: This is a name connected to the Rankin/Bass 'Hobbit' TV film.
: IN repeat re-watchings with my son, I've come to appreciate the '77 movie. It missed quite a lot, but it stayed faithful to most of the book. It could have been half an hour longer, and much better for it.

No offence intended, but I hated that retelling of Tolkein almost as much as I shuddered after watching the Ralph (The Butcher) Bakshi's retelling of LOTR. The characterization of Bilbo is so off that it becomes pathetic. Bilbo in the book was a hero by accident, and often scared out of his wits. Whereas in the movie he is portrayed as a shorter version of Beowulf. Never fearing danger and always having an answer for any predicament.

I can only make offerings to the gods of film that the latest attempt to film LOTR has much better success with the portrayl of the characters.
