: In the invasion of Eriador by Gondor against the ascendancy of :the forces of Angmar one whole division of its army was cavalry, :which operated in a pincer movement independantly of the :infantry of the main body.

In the annals of Gondor (appendice of RotK) it states that the inhabitants of the area were quite impressed with the size of the army sent, but most of all by the horses and the 'proud princes of Rhovanion' who rode them. Were these part of Gondor, or were they just helping the Dunedain out (like the Eotheod, for instance), or perhaps these were mercenary types?
