: : Was Tevildo, Prince of Cats (Tolkien's first conception of a Sauron figure) based upon a character in real-world mythology? I remember in Romeo and Juliet Mercutio calling Tybalt "Prince of Cats", and Tybalt's name is close to Tevildo's.: : I'd check Book of Lost Tales Part 2, because it probably has something on the subject, but my local library is closed for renovation far the next 6 months or so and no other libraries in my town have it. : To the best of my knowledge, Tevildo was not based upon any Shakespearean character. I believe that Tevildo and his "vassals" originated as a foil to the likes of Huan and his wolf-hound kin (or perhaps vice versa). I meant that Mercutio called Tybalt Prince of Cats to mock him, and that Tybalt was also the name of (I think) some legendary figure. I also know that Tolkien despised Shakespeare's opimion of European folklore (he is quoted, on the playwright's portrayal of Elves: "Curse Will Shakespeare and his d*m*ed cobwebs!").
