First of all, it's a hardcover volume, with a dust jacket featuring a new painting by Paulin Baynes. The story is reprinted in its entirety, with all of Ms. Baynes' black and white illustrations as well as two color plates. There are notes on the story in the back of the book. Also included is the first manuscript of the story as Tolkien told to his children, as well as Tolkien's notes on a planned sequel.

There's also a new map of the Middle Kingdom by Pauline Baynes.
