This question has had a purely practical aspect for me, where do I put Tolkien in my bookshelves? With the rest of my SF and fantasy, or with my "Literature" (Shakespeare, Scott, Zola, Joyce, Kafka etc.) in a bookcase in a different room? I hit on a compromise: most of my Tolkiana sits on its own shelf along with the other SF, but two "Luxury" editions snuggle up with Oscar Wilde and William Golding on the Llterature shelves.

Is this a metaphor of a deeper meaning? Tolkien would probably not have cared a jot ;)
