: According to the histories Beor was the leader of the
: 'Beorings' when when they entered Beleriand. His leadership
: passed on to his son and his descendants. The 'Marachians' are
: "all ruled by one chieftain whom they call Marach". His
: leadership passed on to his son and descendants. Even the
: leaders of those men of these houses that left Beleriand are
: the grand children of the original leaders. It seems a more
: likely interpretation is that the lords of the Eldar accepted
: those who were already chieftains and their successors
: continued as they had done. It is interesting to note that the
: cheiftains of the folk of the 'Haladin' are said in one place
: to have been elected from the family of Haldad (who were termed
: the Haladin).

Beor and Marach were chieftains, not lords. Their peoples' societies were altered by interaction with the Eldar. Two examples of these alterations were the appointments of lords for the Beorians and Marachians. Finrod made Boromir (a grandson of Beor) first Lord of Ladros in First Age 410. He was not Lord of the Beorians (some of whom continued to live in Estolad) but rather Lord of Ladros. Fingolfin made Hador the first Lord of Dor-lomin (among the Edain, at least, since Dor-lomin had previously been Fingon's domain).

These lordships provided the basis for nobility among the Edain. The descendants of Boromir and Hador weren't simply chieftains, as their kinsmen in Estolad remained. They were lords.
