I was just rereading the account of Sauron being brought to Numenor and his using the Numenorians fear of death to destroy them. It occured to me that w/in that 50 years he was there he gained a considerable amount of power and influence. Even those things he had no direct power over he could get done what he wanted through subtlety. At one point he was even called a god and all that he ordered would be done. It seems to me if he had bided his time till Ar-Pharozon died he could possibly assumed power over a nation much more powerful than he ever had. At a later date he could have returned to ME and retrieved his ring and been more powerful by far than he was when he was called a god. Just a thought.
