: : A tragic hero is a person who has all the qualities to achieve heroic status, yet, through a tragic flaw/bad decision (dispute in translation), commits the tragic act/s and, because of these acts, is ultimately destroyed/ brought to a fall.: But wouldn't one of those qualities be "good intentions"? And to be a tragic hero, wouldn't one have to be heroic to start with? With Melkor it was never so, as far as I understand it. Well Melkor was the greatest and most powerful of the Valar, so he must had some good, heroic qualities in him to start with, but then again maybe not. You (I think) likened Melkor to Milton's Satan in Paradise Lost and I did the same after reading Paradise Lost. It is interesting that many of the Romantics consider Satan the hero of Paradise Lost. Melkor and that version of Satan are very much alike. Both supremely powerful and heroic to begin with but both falling to jealousy for their superiors. Just some thoughts.
