: Were Orcs capable of doing anything not entirely evil, on purpose, without anyone making them do it, and then not commiting suicide afterwards from total ashamedness?

: Or, in less words, were Orcs completely evil?

In Letters, (I don't have the book with me and can't quote or say which letter) Tolkien on more than one occaission said that the orcs were corrupted but not irredeemable, i.e. they could be "reformed", though we do not have any examples. In the same letters, I seem to recall references to the Trolls from the Hobbit and the sympathy that one showed toward Bilbo. Tolkien said that trolls and orcs were not inherently evil.
