: been short and broad and bearded.Well, I've never really been able to put together an argument one way or another, but as I think of it, Ingold says these are a new type of Easterling, and the Variags (though mentioned only once, I think) are named in passing as if they were familiar to the people of Gondor. So I would now guess the fork-bearded guys are NOT Variags, even though that name is associated with Scandinavians. Interestingly, you and I are using basically the same clues to reach opposite conclusions. I would say there's not enough information available.
