: The Hobbit, Chapter VIII, Flies and Spiders Maybe it was dyed? Besides, The Hobbit was a children's book, and Tolkien's children were probably expecting Elves with golden hair, and he put it in to please him. Or maybe a mistake? Even the greatest minds slip up once in a while.
