I have never thought of LOTR as medieval, but it's better than the outlandish weapons and costumes you see in the majority of fantasy movies and television programs. Since most people have some familiarity with Medieval settings through other films,it would give them a sense of a familiar world, their world in the past.

I think alot of confusion is going to come out of this "Medieval look" idea. Fantasy readers also tend to be history readers and so most of us probably have specific (and pretty accurate) images when we hear Medieval, Ancient or whatever. We also have pretty specific ideas of the "look" when we read the stories but I doubt most people could place it into a specific time period. The Hobbits wear country squire type clothes-- breeches, jackets,and waistcoats but most of the other characters wear tunics and cloaks and the like--more dark ages or early middle ages. To keep the tone of the books will probably require a mixture of styles. The only thing that I would NEVER want to see is the cartoonish type of costume/weaponry like you see on those Xena/Hercules type shows.
