I've never really given it much thought but I've always thought that Tolkien's ME was medieval but on a grand scale. I've always considered the peoples of ME to be "closer to the source of their creation" and thus their abilities, whatever form they take, are far superior to either ours or our medieval times. As an example, Minus Tirith, while not of the caliber of the greatest elvin or Numenorian cities, was extremly impressive. Far exceeding anything of our medieval cities or structures. Some people's descriptions of ME using statements like "bronze age" or "iron age" to me denote primitive cultures and structures. I find this to be extremely inaccurate in describing the world of ME. Maybe that's just my take on it but describing ME as medieval in nature does not disturb me.
