: Why has there been no significant progress since the first age of middle-earth ? 6000+ years have gone by, and nothing at least pre-industrial has been developed (I mean they knew gunpowder in old china). Itīs like there has been no progress on earth since the days of ancient egypt or so !??

Well, too much technological progress would just ruin the whole thing. I don't think I'd find Tolkien's world quite so intriguing if the horses were traded for cars, swords for guns and winged beasts to F-18:s. I guess that's not quite what you meant, but if M-E reminded us too closely of the real world, it would lose it's charm. And 'progress' would do just that. Anyway, perhaps progress wasn't needed, because the quality of people's lives was good enough without it.
