: : Anyone know how Gildor was related to Fingon? Cousin? Nephew? Son?: Ithink he may have been Turgon's son, because "Inglorion" means something related to "iron", and Turgon seems to have been in the habit of naming his kids after metals. Turgon only had one child and her name was Idril (Itarild(l)e) Celebrindal, which means means 'glittering brilliant light' and 'silverfoot'. 'Inglorion' probobly signifies 'scion of Inglor' which was another name for Finrod Felagund and means something to the effect of 'golden prince'( 'lor' or 'glor' from 'lawar-, glawar'='gold (light)' and 'in, ing'= 'first, foremost, chief' (similar to the latin princepes)) refering to his hair and heritage. So Inglorion probobly means 'son of the golden prince' (depending on the root the stem '-ion' can be a patrinomic (ie 'son of' eg Ereinion=Scion (son) of Kings), a collective plural ('aiya Earendil elenion ancalima'='hail Earendil of all the stars most bright') , or suffix indicitive of the male gender (eg Tilion=horned (til-)+ (-ion) that is "the man in the moon"). At the time of LOTR Finrod was being considered as the name of Finarfin and Finrod Felagund was Inglor. So a 'more correct' reading might be 'Gildor Inglorion of the House of Finarfin' or Gildor son of Inglor (Finrod Felagund) of the House of Finarfin. This may have been an initial conception of JRRT but I do not think he elaborated on it. This would be at variance with his statement about Elrond being the 'last male descendant of Finwe in Middle-earth' (which in itself is not exactly true as Elrond had two sons, who were descended from Finwe through both their father and mother, and the Dunedain kings are descended from Finwe through Elros brother of Elrond). What JRRTs' conception on this may have changed to is unknown to me. It could be possible that Gildor is the son of Finrod Felagund (after he was released from Mandos into Aman he could have then wed Amarie and had a son who may have come to Middle-earth during the War of Wrath or perhaps with Glorfindel) [a theoritical possibility which I do not necesarily agree with, but am presenting merely as a possible interpretation].
