Although I think he has his own concept of beauty, he worded it like that to leave it to our imagination since we all have our own opinions on what Beauty is. For example...There are two versions of the phantom of the Opera musicals. One where you see the Phantom's face and one where you have to imagine what someone is seeing when the mask is removed because he is always turned away from the audience. The second way is more effective because in our minds we see what effects us personally. To have it given to you like "Here is what the phantom looks like," "Here is what beauty is" its like... Ok, maybe to you, but that doesn't do anything for me at all. So to allow us to see the image of our beauty in our own minds eye was probably his intention...and was a good choice in my opinion. We can see the characters in a way that makes them real to us.
