The contest of songs between Sauron and Finrod at Tol-in-Gaurhoth was impressive, but was there really much point in it? The only outcome seemed to be that the companions were stripped of their disguise. Sauron didn't gain any other benefit. So what actually was at stake there? Did Finrod gain a partial victory by preventing their whole purpose from being revealed to Sauron? And what might have happened, had Finrod gained the upper hand?
