: Does this mean that more joined Aragorn before the battle, or
: that the 'picked men' of Rangers were only about twenty.
: They were defending a Hill at the end, so top face Mordor in
: the front line, surely more than a few would be required? And
: would Aragorn risk his close kinsman like that if there were
: really so few of them?
: What does anyone else think???

Halbarad is the only Dunadan we know was killed, and unless other Dunedain followed Aragorn's company through the Paths of the Dead (and there is no mention of any doing that), there was no way they could have reinforced him in Gondor.

Also, Frodo saw the Misty Mountains crawling with Orcs when he sat on Amon Hen. My feeling is that most of the Rangers were probably fighting Orcs in defense of Rivendell and their homelands. But maybe someone will find a passage which sheds more light on the issue, or opens up more possibilities.
