: : I have often wondered about the scale of battles in ME. Tolkien
: : describes armies as being vast but never puts any numbers on
: : them. Does anyone know anything about how many men participated
: : in pellanor fields?...I know 6,000 riders from rohan arrived
: : and 30,000 haradrim fought for sauron. I am hoping that maybe
: : there is some information in a reference book that i have not
: : yet read on this.

: All anyone can do is make some educated guesses. I think we've had a couple of threads on this in the past, though I don't recall any specific details. Once all the good guys got assembled there were probably 15-20,000 men fighting for Minas Tirith and Gondor, and probably well over 30,000 fighting for Sauron.

That seems a bit lite. Sauron's forces would have to greatly outnumber those in Minas Tirith to have a chance of success. Even had the WK entered the main gate, The Gondorians could have turned each level into a killing field. There would be little or no room for Sauron's forces to maneuver within each level. Grond could probably no be brought to bear within Minas Tirith on the inside gates.

: But for the most part there are no numbers provided. You just have to imagine large numbers of Men, Elves, and Dwarves.

: I've always imagined the armies of the War of the Last Alliance numbering in the hundreds of thousands (perhaps 150-200,000 on the Alliance side, and many more on Sauron's side).
