The sacrifice of himself in order to save others spiritually enhanced him, just like Glorfindel was spiritually enchanced after having sacrificing himself to save Tuor and co in the Fall of Gondolin. And therefore became more powerful in the process.

That's what I meant, I also remember something about Gandalf facing a great evil before he came to Eru, could this great evil be Morgoth??
