I see your point, but like yourself, going off my memory, when the forces of good left Gondor on their way to the gates of Mordor to serve as a distraction for Frodo, it numbers them at 7000??? I think, but then says that this number of men was but nothing in the days of Minias Tirith's glory, saying that in the old days of Gondors army it would have been no more than a vanguard. This leads me to think that one stage the armed forces must have numbered many, possibly over 50,000. A population to support an army of this size would need to be much larger than 100,000.
