: Which king was this? The only kings in known Middle-earth at this time that I can think of are Thranduil and Thengel.

I believe it is said somewhere that hobbits said that of folk like trolls, and were referring to the King of Arnor. (at that time the throne was vacant) Don't remember where I read this though.
