I need to have some theory to ease the anguish of : my soul. Well, people began leaving Ithilien after the city fell, so I guess its strategic importance to Gondor decline. The original account of the fall of the city implies attempts were made to retake it, but it provides no details. I don't have an opinion, really, as I've never really thought about it before.
