Most likely for the picture. I don't think they were "acting" at all at the moment.

Keep in mind that the "hobbits" will be shrunk down digitally to fit the bill for the movie. Thus, i would imagine that the horse/pony will also be shrunk. It makes sense to film it in size at the moment.
