: How come Isildur wasn't tempted to use the Ring? : If it was literally just off his hand and laden with his evil will ( saurons that is ) why wasn't Isildur converted into a new Dark Lord? Surely he would have recognised it for what it was and possibly had thoughts of using it? Doesn't he write about it being precious to Him, so therefore he will bear the pain of it ( which if he had it in a gold case seems a bit odd... )? : He went against the council of Elrond, Cirdan etc and kept it ( the rings work??) so if it started on him then already ( after only a few minutes?? ) and he bore it for two years... : Why not Isildur the great?? eat fishisiss three times a day....Possibly because Isildur was a tweenie. He was strong enough to make the ring desire to leave him quickly, before Isildur had a chance to use it effectively - the ring having a loyalty to the interests of its maker. However, he was apparently not strong enough (unlike - probably - Gandalf, Saruman, Elrond or Galadriel) to master the ring immediately. These latter, more powerful, beings would have been able to dominate the ring to make use of it, though it would have later subverted their actions towards evil. Just a thought.
