I don't know, in my own life there have been people that I may have worked around for months and not really gotten to know them or some people I felt that I out and out did'nt like at all but when circumstances threw us together for a while a strong friendship developed. I think the way Gimli was ultimately treated by Galadriel would have raised his opinion of elves I don't think Legolas would have really blamed the dwarves for the balrog, even though he popped out as a result of the greed of the dwarves for mithril. In addition, even though Moria was dark and unpleasant surely Legolas could envision how wonderful it once was. The fact that their friendship grew over time strikes as making it all the more believeable. Each must have gained greater insight and respect for each other and their races as a result of going through so many trials together, which can often be the case in real life. I can handle a growing relationship easier than I can a one time "thing" that would suddenly make them good buds.
