: ...seems like he would most certainly have been there at the battle of 5 armies - unless he was given the job of taking care of the home while pop went to war...he was obviously of age (citing his references to Aragorn and Gimli as "children") : I think Legolas must not have been Thranduil's only son, nor even his eldest, for him to send him on an errand that could take years, not to mention one that could cost him his life, so there must have been an elder brother back home...(Assuming of course, that elves follow men's traditional chains of power.)Indeed, probably the eldest son though (the one sent to the vital Council of Elrond). History is replete with examples of the heir to the throne being off in battle or diplomatic intrigue. He might even have had an arrow aimed at Gimli's Dad before the Bolg boys turned up. Legolas is a bit of a loser all in all though, by far the dullest character in the books (with the exception of Galadriel whom I have a singular dislike for)
