: the istari were maia so was sauron but why were the maia afraid of saurons
: black cronies they were only dead men enforced by rings why not sauron himself??

Gandalf faced all nine of the Nazgul at night and gained at least a draw. Even after being defeated and cast from the Order, Saruman would have been able to withstand the Nazgul from within Isengard, and could possibly have been able to trap one (according to Gandalf). I don't think that the Istari were precisely afraid of the Nazgul, although they were certainly cautious of them.
