: : : I'm probably missing something really obvious here, so at the : : : risk of sounding foolish, I'll ask: : : : If Anduril (or Narsil) was broken for so long and it was : : : carried by Aragorn up until the fellowship arrived in Rivendell : : : and was there reforged, what had he been fighting with all that : : : time??? I don't see where he had a backup sword?!: : You don't sound foolish. Many people have wondered what the deal was. : This question may also be voiced: What did Aragorn carry a broken sword for, why not let it lie safe in Rivendell? The sword was physical link to his heritage. He could touch the sword and touch something that his fore father's had touched. Just holding it may have given him comfort or bolstered his resolve. Untill shortly before his death, my father carried an old worn pocket knife with one broken blade and the other almost worn away from repeated sharpenings. It had been given to him by his father.
