: : But surely the importance of the palantir would have meant : : that the attempt would have been worth it? look how useful it : : was for sauron in the war of the ring. Without that, wouldn't : : it have been easier for Gondor? the kings were far sighted : : men: perhaps they would have seen this?: : Good argument though:) : At the time the identity of the nazgul was uncertain to the : leaders of Gondor and Sauron was not known to have arisen : again. Would the recovery of an artifact (however useful) be : worth the potential ruin of the army and the state? The : leaders of Gondor, with a few exeptions, were pragmatists : unlikely to do a "Noldor and the Silmarils" excursion for the : sake of one of the Palantiri. It might have been doubtful to : Earnur whether the enemy would be able to make effective use of : the Palantir, as it was made for the use of elves in the first : place. Given the restrictions on who could use the Palantiri, the Dunedain may have decided that it was not a problem anyway, and that the future might provide a better opportunity to recover the palantir, which would be virtually useless in the hands of the the unauthorized.
