At the death of Thingol, the elven king was aware of the dwarves lust for the Silmaril and he proceeded to denigrate them. Among the things he said was how he had walked about ages before the fathers of the "stunted people" awoke. This indicates to me that the elves were awakened long before the dwarves. This is part of the problem w/ the Silmarillion, that time spans seem to be MUCH shorter than they actually are.
