Good work & thanks for the alert! Seamus Heaney's new ed. of Beowulf cites Tolkien specifically for his work on Beowulf criticism- he brought criticism back to 'the forest' (the lit. achievement of the poem, the product of an imiginative write), from the 'trees' of a decayed tradition of criticism, which had emphasized possible sources, chr./pagan influences of the era, mundane linguistic clues, etc. Note also that "13th Warrior" movie (espec in original book version, "Eaters of the Dead, by Crichton) retells the Beowulf legend in a semi-historical setting.
