But that is my point, I always pictured the swords as LARGE for an elf - a two-handed broadsword 5 to six feet in length.

Sorry, didn't know that the lifespan question was controversial - I'm relatively new to the board. Chalk it up as my opinion, though.

I believe Aelmer atated it better - the "taint" of Morgoth. You're right, though, Thorin had quite a temper which probably wasn't improved by being kidnapped ;)
