: The Elves had many Maiar characteristics, and the decendendents of Melian and Thingol had Maiar blood. I was just wondering if Tolkein intended the Elves to be the level below Maiar amongst the Ainur.
: The Ainur (on Arda) order would in this case be: Vala, Herald, Maia, Elf.I think the elves are not part of the ainur. The ainur are maiar and valar. Elves like men are the 'children of Illuvatar' born in Arda. The ainur are those that were with him before Arda was made.
