I am really torn on this. On one hand, I want the films to be as accurate to Tolkien as possible. One the other, I want them to popular enough to bring new readers into Tolkien's world. I'm not concerned about the 'great un-washed hordes'. They never stay long anyway.
I don't look forward to having tons of crappy promotional merchandise crammed down my throat, or the inevitable slew of "Tolkien Inspired" television and film projects. Still, in amongst all the slag there will no doubt be a few jewels.
Besides, pop culture waxes and wanes. After all is said and done and the hype fades away, Tolkien fans will still be fans and there will hopefully be new fans. Nothing to become depressed about. Irked yes, depressed no.
