Something that has always struck me as odd is seeing as how the elves are real lovers of beauty and from the description of Mirkwood in the Hobbit, seemed a rather dark, nasty place, why on earth would Thranduil's people want to live in such a place. Maybe it was prettier before the Necromancer moved in "next door". Even so, early on Sauron wasn't all that powerful and I wonder why the elves in Mirkwood didn't try harder to drive him out since he was really bringing the neighborhood down.
