I know alot of people have been getting worked up over this Elves vs. Dwarves thing so I hope what I am about to say won't get everyone upset again. I've been trying to make up my mind if there was any real problems between dwarves and elves.(I don't know if anyone else has said this yet) Well I was just reading the Silmirillion and I got to the part where Aule makes dwarves and then Lluvatar rebukes him but decides to let them exist. Leevatar tells Aule that the dwarves can't live until after The Elves come. Well Lluvatar(ERU) says on page 41 that, and I quote: "...But when the time comes I will awaken them, and they shall be to thee as children; and often strife shall arise between thine(Dwarves) and mine(Elves), the children of my adoption(Dwarves) and the children of my choice (Elves)." That is what changed my mind. Obviously either Eru intends for there to be strife between dwarves and elves or he can forsee that these problems will arise. So you decide although since the creator himself just said that there will be problems between them I don't know how you can come to any other conclusion than that there really was strife between them and that it wasn't imagined.
