IMHO everybody is able to form their own literary taste independantly of what is taught in school. I remeber my teacher at school teaching 'To Kill a Mockingbird' with a hell of a lot of enthusiasm and love. I enjoyed it at the time, but have since come to loathe what I remember of the book (although I still appreciate the teacher). On the other hand I now take great delight in Chaucer and Shakespear although it was initially ground into me in a loathing and uninspiring way.I don't think bad tecahing can put people off a good back. On the other hand,, having a book on a set syllabus ensures it has a high circulation, and can recah people it might otherwise not reach. In my opinion, the net benefit of teaching Tolkien at school is good for Tolkien.
