: You see, I was an English major in university and the work that has had the most profound meaning in my life has been, without a doubt, The Lord of the Rings and yet it is not something I studied at school/university and if I had "been forced" to read it at some point I'm almost sure I would not have got the same enjoyment out of it. On the other side of the coin, there are those who, when introduced to an author at school, will love it and continue to read that author. I would never have found that I liked John Milton unless I had been assigned it.
