The rings were to preserve 'elvishness' in Middle Earth and delay the coming of the age of men.Indeed, but looking at it from the port of view of a fallible child of Eru, it is entirely understandable to have selfish desires such as Galadriel's. Her aim wasn't to impinge on the dominion of men, but was to prolong the elves in Arda.
In that respect, maybe it wasn't a huge sin. Gandalf
