: Someone on Joram Manka's rinbearer movie site made an interesting comment about a quote made in the hobbit that leads a person to believe in powder weapons in ME. I lost the quote but its on ringbearer. Someone will rmember it. Tolkien who was of course in WWI had experienced these things. I suggest you go to the fandom main site and take their link to rinbearer. When there click on the "books" discussion and you will find the thread with the quote. It is an interesting topic.There are references to 'blasting powder' made during the Battle of Helm's Deep. I assume it to be some form of black powder. It seems that at least Saruman had figured out how to make it, however there were no reports of Uruk-hai picking off defenders with matchlocks :)
