: The FA elves do seem to demonstrate a lack of wisdom at times. : The problem is, they have to make decisions and take action for : there to be any story, but those actions can't be any smarter : than what Tolkien could come up with. They can't really be much : smarter than the author. Tolkien could have written that "the : elf-lords were very wise in all their actions, but Morgoth was : wiser still and eventually managed to contrive their downfall", : but that wouldn't be much of a tale. So some of their actions : have to be told, and not all that is done can be as sensible as : perhaps would do justice to the characters, because the author : can't come up with ideas that will match elven-wisdom.Wisdom comes as the result of experience, and each tragedy was a new experience for the Elves. They were driven by their own needs and desires, and once they fell from grace they were subject to all the obligations incumbent with the fall. What really distinguishes the Third Age Elves from the First Age Elves is the path of redemption the Elven race has had to walk through the ages.
