: Regardless of Sauron's power and whether or not our beloved Dark Lord could have defeated Gandalf, the very reason why Gandalf assumed a human form was so he, while passing under the guise of a human, could teach and lead the fair races of Middle-Earth that they could defeat the Dark Lord without direct help from Maia or other outerworldy entities. This was so they could resist the next Dark Lord after Sauron(the one MEO is about) without the Maia's direct intervention.

So what's the Dark Lord is MEO?
