In "The Fall of Gondolin" in the BOLT2, it says after Rog's onslaught that that was the first time the eldar killed any of the Balrogs. I don't have the book here, but I believe it said something to that extent. It seems to me that this particular notion stuck, and that this is true for the "Silmarillion" as well. It ended up being only 7 of the balrogs, so they should be impotant enough to be mentioned whenever one was killed. No matter how powerful Feanor was, I don't believe he had much of a chance killing a balrog when he was under attack by several at the same time - they were, after all, powerful maia spirits in their own right. And besides, he did certainly not have the favor of the Valar nor that of Illuvatar at the time.
