: Yes, Frodo failed, pure and simple, he is not a particularly good character to empathise with either, what if one of the other Hobbits had got hold of the ring - Sam wanted to be a great gardener, what of Pippin the ring lord - the greatest smoking, beer swilling Took of all time? And what did Frodo say the HE would do were he the Ringlord? ;)

I do not think that Frodo's fauilure is either pure or simple. He did succeed in brining the Ring, through great peril, to the Crack of Doom--no small task. And it can be strongly argued that the compassion and mercy he showed Gollum--when others, like Sam, would have slain the wretch--allowed for the destruction of the Ring. Failure and success cannot be measured by the basic question of, "Did he personally throw the ring in?" At least, that is my thought on the matter.
