: : : Is there any indication anywhere of how long ago the events in Tolkien`s chronology are meant to be?

: : The events that take place were not mean't to have taken place in our world, therefore you cannot place them in real world history. Remember its a story, it doesnt have to have anything to do with the real world.

: In one of his letters, I seem to recall, Tolkien said that he envisoned the events in LotR taking place in a imaginary past, about 6000 years ago. I don't think Alexander believes that the events depicted really took place but you never know :).

Thankyou, and yes, it`s tempting:)

Anyway, that is indeed what I meant: how long ago was this imaginary past supposed to be?

Can you remember which letter this was? Also, are there any references to this question in the History of Middle Earth?
