: A cyclist could almost go that fast, what took Shadowfax so long?

????

I always had the impression that bicycles are faster than horses. An untrained cyclist should have little difficulty maintaining 20mph for longer stretches providing road conditions allow this. Sports cyclists regularly achieve speeds of 60mph or more. I am not sure how fast horses really are over long distances. I imagine that in the golden age of stagecoaches, where such vehicles ran on macadamised roads drawn by four or more horses, the speed cannot have been in excess of 30 or 40mph. And those horses were changed at every stop, which was about every 30 or 40 miles. Wheras in the case of Shadowfax's historic run, it was the same horse throughout. This is still quite an achievement.
