: I see a lot of people saying things like Tolkien wrote the story to create a mythos for England or other reasons. I have a copy of the Fellowship if the Ring right here and he says. "I wanted to write a really long story that would hold the readers interest all the way through." He didn't have anything more in mind than entertainment. Tolkiens own words.

I used this argument in a debate a while ago. Nobody can seem to accept that Tolkien was only trying to tell a story. I aggree with you completley. But then again, I suppose it's only fair to show both sides of the coin. He later says in that foreword that he didn't write the story to contain any allegory, he then goes to explain what he means by this. (I.E. the war of the ring doesn't represent the world war, the scouring of the shire doesn't represent the state of England at the time. So maybe what Tolkien means here is that he didn't write these stories to show any allegory for what is here on the earth today, but for what was here long ago. All IMO of course.
