Technically they were never conquered, but with the death of Hardang their effective leadership ended and many of them left the forest, some following Hurin, others heading south toward Arvernien. They were never really a force to be reckoned with except when Turin was leading them, or they had reinforcements from Doriath (which occasionally happened).
