I have a related question.

If Tolkien has said that Middle Earth was supposed to be roughly the size and place of Western Europe today, and was supposed to exist roughly 6-10,000 years ago (all of which I recall from prior discussions on this board, so forgive me for the lack of cites), did Tolkien ever say what he believed was going on at the time in the remaining 90% of the earth's land mass?
